Need help with SketchUp?

SketchUp is a free modeling software that is really easy to learn but also quite powerful when you have mastered its reasonably intuitive toolset.

Yes, it's free!

(It also works on Mac's and PC's ... and because it is so fast to learn we use it extensively in the first year Architecture design studio as well as in our Communications and History courses ... download it here).

The SketchUp model provided was created using the free 2017 version of SketchUp (SketchUp Make), so that's the one you want.

To get our first year Architecture students going we give them this link: "Getting started with SketchUp" (do all 4 tutorials).

With those 4 short video tutorials you'll have almost all the skills you'll need to complete this project.

If you'd like to save a lot of time, we would recommend you do the "Familiar with SketchUp" tutorials too ... these are really short, but real time savers.

  1. Is this a general help page? If so, can you help me with a problem that has just recently started. When I draw a square over an existing shape coloured brown, it all gets obliterated with grey and the lines of the square are not visible. I'm just drawing plans in 2D and the problem has only just occurred so I'm wondering if I've inadvertently altered a setting. I hope someone can help because I've been trying unsuccessfully for about half an hour to make sense of the Sketchup help pages.
